THE ICON EXPLAINED

The Icon of the Resurrection, also known as The Harrowing of Hades, portrays the profound mystery of Christ’s victory over death. According to the Greek Orthodox tradition, this event occurs after Christ’s crucifixion but before His Resurrection. These were not silent days in the tomb; rather, Christ descended into Hades to free the souls who had long awaited redemption.

At the center of the icon stands Christ, robed in white and surrounded by a radiant mandorla (Italian for “almond”), symbolizing the uncreated light and glory of God. His garment flows upward, revealing His dynamic descent into the depths of death to rescue humanity. Beneath His feet lie the shattered gates of Hades, torn apart by His power, while scattered keys and locks symbolize His conquest over death and hell itself.

Chained at the bottom is a skeletal figure—Death, or Satan—bound and defeated. This powerful image embodies the triumph proclaimed in Hebrews 2:14: “That through death He might destroy him who has the power of death, that is, the devil.” Thus, as the Orthodox hymn of Pascha joyfully declares, “Christ has trampled down death by death.”

Christ’s hands reach out to Adam and Eve, raising them from their tombs. This act represents the redemption of all humanity, from the first parents to the last generation, and prefigures the general resurrection before the Final Judgment. To His left stand the righteous of the Old Covenant—David and Solomon, His royal ancestors, and John the Baptist, His forerunner in both life and death. To His right are prophets and holy figures such as Moses, Abel the shepherd, and the three youths from the fiery furnace, witnesses of God’s saving power through the ages.

The mandorla that surrounds Christ deepens in color toward its center, expressing the mystery of divine light. In Eastern Christian mysticism, this light is not mere brightness—it is the uncreated light of God’s presence, the same light that shone at the Transfiguration and fills the hearts of the pure: “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” As one draws closer to God, one enters what the mystics call “the darkness of His light”—the paradox of knowing and yet not comprehending the Infinite.

Thus, the Icon of the Anastasis is not only a depiction of a past event but a living proclamation: that Christ has descended into our deepest darkness to raise us into His eternal light.
